When I started on this wall map journey I had no intention of making a Yellowstone wall map. But a few people asked for it and I thought “why not?” I’ve been making Yellowstone folded trail maps since 2009 so I know the park fairly well. It actually is a lot easier to make a map if you are familiar with the area.

This map has all Yellowstone trails, campgrounds, picnic areas, and backcountry campsites with their codes.

To show the park in relation to its surroundings, the map shows the gateway towns of Gardiner, West Yellowstone, and Cooke City, and also the nearby communities of Ashton, Island Park, and Big Sky. The physical geography is shown beyond the park border too. Perhaps one of the most interesting features of this map is the contrast of the Beartooth Mountains’ alpine plateaus at the northeast corner to eastern Idaho’s farm fields at the southwest corner.

Like all Basin and Range maps, this combines hypsometric (changes in elevation) coloring and vegetation coloring for a very realistic visualization of the landscape. Nobody else in the mapping world does this.
